If you are interested in making even a small contribution to the conservation work of the Friends of Flass Vale then we are sure you will enjoy some of the events listed below. We look forward to seeing you! Please check for updates as dates do occassionly change.
 
Summer Programme 2008
 
  • 2pm Sunday 31 August: Grassland Restoration

    Meet at the Valeside entrance to the Vale. We’ll be raking dead vegetation prior to the spreading of “green hay”. Bring a rake if you can!

 
  • Morning of Sunday 14 September: Transporting “green hay”

    Volunteers with an estate car, or better still a trailer and can help to transport the “green hay” from Deerness to the Vale please contact the Friends if you can help. Val Standen is co-ordinating this task.

 
Autumn/ Winter 2008~09
 
  • 10.30 am Saturday 18 October: Build a bird box (URC Church, Waddington Street)

    Children and adults interested in assembling bird box kits for tits, owls and kestrels should come to this! Durham County Rangers will be showing us how to put the bird boxes together so they can be put in place later in the year.

 
  • FOFV AGM - Tuesday 18th November 7.30pm at Waddington Street URC Church Hall.

    The presenting of annual reports, election of officers and an opportunity for discussion of the Vale.

    Followed by a talk by local hsitorian David Butler who will give a talk entitled

    'THE BATTLE OF NEVILLE'S CROSS AND MAIDEN'S BOWER'

 
  • Sunday 7th December at 2pm. Tree Planting - Part of National Tree Week.

    Tree planting in the Vale near the area known as Hangman's Hill. Behind Back Western Hill. A good activity for Adults and Children.

    Meet in Valeside at 2pm - please bring a spade.

Spring/Summer 2009
 
  • Sunday 10th May 11 am (Kingslodge entrance) - Tree maintenance.

    Maintaining work and weed clearance of previously planted trees

    Not as exciting as tree planting but equally important

 
  • Saturday 30th May 10 - 12.30 am Coffee morning (Waddington Street UR Church Hall).

    A coffee morning to raise funds for the Flass Vale Local Nature reserve

    Coffee/Tea & Hot Scones, - Tombola, - Cake, Plant, - Bric-a-brac & Book Stalls

    LAUNCH OF PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

    We hope to produce a fundraising calendar of Flass Vale photographs

    Please send up to three 5" * 7" (landscale format) photographs to FOFV Photo Competition, Bye Cottage, DURHAM, DH1 4NB

    Please send your own photos that you are happy to be included in a calendar and include your contact details

  • Sunday 21st Feb 10 am (At the Kingslodge Entrance) - Hedge Laying with Tom Milburn.

    We will be working on the hedge near the bungalow, using brushwood from Maidens Bower for stakes. If you wish to take part bring gloves, and if you can, bill hook and a small saw.
